First - full disclosure up front. I’ve used SLV here and there. The physical silver I obtained for personal/family purposes happened many years ago. It sits in storage and literally does nothing. In recent years I’ve incrementally purchased a few hundred bucks a handful of times a year to give to our daughter so she can learn and hold assets. That’s my silver experience in terms of transactions. We’re not ‘trading’ this silver per se but might do something with it eventually. I tell my soon to be 9YO daughter “hey silver is pushing new highs again” and she says “that’s cool daddy” and keeps doing what she is doing.  

Why Silver?

To address this let’s use a very old and very boring report published in 2004 by the U.S. Geological Survey. I’m intentionally avoiding anything recent for this as I’m quite confident I can easily find hundreds of reports or publications telling us how amazing Silver is as they try and sell us something. This old report is boring. It’s also about . . . . . . . Silver . . . . . which is still the same thing . . . . . . . which is the point . . . . . . get it?

Sure - photography industry has certainly changed since 2004. No doubt. However - with AI, warfighting needs and supply chains, and advanced technologies in my view we will see a LOT MORE industrial demand for Silver as time goes on.

Before we look at the trading action in SLV first we need to expand our framework and mindset a bit. I’ve been using and emphasizing (it’s all there in the prior blog posts) this ‘Melt Up’ framework viewed primarily through the lens of Bitcoin/Silver/Uranium. No changes to that aside from the addition of a new group if you will - Rare Earths. Why? Rare Earths are now at least somewhat investable. Rather than merely a slew of penny stocks with no volume and no liquidity - the market now has some liquid assets to play with and trade.

This does not mean that the “only things” worth monitoring regarding the ‘Melt Up’ are Bitcoin/Silver/Uranium/Rare Earths. However - with these things we have demand and we have elements of scarcity. We like that when conceptually using our brain and imagination to open our minds up to possible outcomes.

This is a long term look going back to 2007 or so. You can see that Silver longs have paid their dues a few times here and there over time. Obviously - one can fool around with projections related to this massive Base formation and potential Cup With Handle. Remember - even IBD is clear that a Base that looks like a nice Cup does not have to form a Handle . . . . . or it might.

Thoughts and Observations:

  • Investors have to make their own decisions whether they want to own any Silver and how

  • Lots of Cloak and Dagger about the supply of Silver, locations, the CBOE, and other institutions involved and lots of shenanigans . . . . . . . those rabbit holes could steal a lot of time from you in my view

  • My own personal stance is that our family is not selling anything anytime soon . . . . . . . might use SLV more moving forward . . . . . intent would be to hang in there through the market’s absorption of the AI Capex Boom AND the market’s absorption of how Bessent manages this explosion of debt over the highest of Time Frames
